ELIZABETH BOULEVARD GATEWAY ENTRIES

Project Description

Back in 1911, John Ryan began envisioning a new neighborhood for the southside of Fort Worth. The goal was to rival the mansions along the Trinity River, Summit, and Pennsylvania avenues.  In the mid-1920s, the neighborhood, now called Ryan Place, was home to many of Fort Worth’s most prominent families. In 1979, Elizabeth Boulevard joined the National Register of Historic Places, making Ryan Place the only residential historic district in Fort Worth. In 1983 a group of residents petitioned to bring back the historic gateway entries at Elizabeth Boulevard and Eighth Avenue.  The city demolished the gates in 1955, considering them traffic hazards. The group set up an annual home tour to raise money to reconstruct the gates.  Today, the beautifully restored gateway columns and residential homes, both grand and modest, show the resilience and steadfastness of Ryan Place residents. SPSD was brought in to develop a formal landscape design that would accentuate the stately grandness of the gateway columns.
