In addition to development and maintenance, we also offer design service for residential clients. Our team of expert designers will work with you to create a site plan so you have the ideal landscape and outdoor living environment. At SPSD, we work to enhance your outdoor space with creative landscape designs that combine practical and aesthetically pleasing elements.

Our designers map out your current landscape and outdoor living space, factoring in drainage, irrigation, grading, plant selection, and maintenance to then deliver a plan for your new project. Utilizing a wide-range of Texas-native plants and trees, along with natural stone and other accessories, we deliver your desired aesthetic.

The Process

Getting Started

  • Initial Meeting with Homeowner(s).
I begin every design with getting to know the client. I want to know what you like to do outside and how you plan to use your outdoor space. I will ask a series of questions regarding the scope of work, program, budget, schedule, plant style, and specific plant likes and dislikes.
  • Measurements and Photos.
Before I leave the property, I will always take time to photography the areas included in the scope of work. I will also take an inventory and field locate all plant material, whether it’s staying or being removed.
  • Design Proposal.
After we have discussed the deliverables and schedule, I will send a proposal for my time to design and document the project. The fee will be a flat fee based on an hourly rate that it will take to complete the work. I always include a free round of revisions, so the client doesn’t feel locked into anything they don’t want.

Design and Documentation

  • Design.
I will always give an opinion for what I think will be in the best interest of the client. Having said that, If at the end of the conversation(s) the client wants to go a different direction on design, I’m more than willing to work with whatever parameters are put on me to achieve a design you will really enjoy and be proud of.
  • Document.
Once the project has been designed, I will develop a hand-drawn plan with plant and hardscape callouts so that a landscape contractor can understand how to plan and estimate the project. For most clients, a conceptual plan, plant list and material schedule will be sufficient to communicate the design. There will be times when more visual aids will be required to communicate the design. Extra visual aids, like character imagery, vignettes, and/or details, can help the homeowners feel more comfortable about moving forward with a design.

Review and Estimation

  • Final Meeting.
Once I complete to documentation process, I will send an email with the completed deliverables for review. After the client has had some time to digest and generate their thoughts, we get back together either on the phone or in person to discuss any changes and the next steps of the project.
  • Estimate.
Once all changes are made and the plan has been agreed upon, I will get ourestimating team involved to generate an opinion of probable cost estimate. Should you decide to have SPSD do the installation, I will credit back 50% of the design fee at the end of substantial completion.
